Mayor McHone lives in the Town of Stuart with his wife Brenda. James and Brenda have three grown children, Dena Holliman, Jon McHone, Justin McHone and 10 grandchildren, and one great grandchild. James, who retired from his career in the textiles industry in May 2006, loves NASCAR racing, bike riding and spending time with his grandchildren. Mayor McHone attended Ferrum College after graduating from Stuart High School in 1962.

James is active in his church and Gideons International. A Love of Patrick County is evident in the Mayor’s remarks, “I’ve lived here all my life. I have seen the town of Stuart grow in the last ten years. I think the Town of Stuart has a bright future. With our already established businesses and the addition of new businesses, we will continue to grow”.
